I'm not sure how other people go about determining the best books they've read in a year. My method is completely unscientific. I look through my book journal, and make a list of books I loved. Strangely, this does not always mirror my five star books on Goodreads. Sometimes time away from a certain book makes it grow fonder in my memory, or the opposite may also happen.
And I can't seem to limit myself to just 10 books that I loved in a year. I read somewhere around 200 books each year, and picking just 10 amazing books is nearly impossible.
Here's what I read and loved in 2015:
Non-Fiction
The Smartest Kids in the World by Amanda Ripley
Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America by Jill Leovy
The Orpheus Clock by Simon Goodman
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande
Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
Adult Fiction
The Martian by Andy Weir
Girl at War by Sara Novic
The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson
The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
Admissions by Meg Mitchell Moore
We Never Asked For Wings by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
The Longest Night by Andria Williams
Tween/Young Adult:
The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Orbiting Jupiter by Gary Schmidt
The Paper Cowboy by Kristin Levine
Most Dangerous by Steve Sheinkin
Fish In a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
Dumplin' by Julie Murphy
I'm enjoying looking through everyone else's "best" lists and am adding things to my always growing TBR piles and lists. I can't wait to snuggle up with a good book tonight (party animal that I am) and ring in 2016.
Happy New Year to you all!

I think it's amazing that you read 200 books a year. Truly. My list overlaps with yours a bit. Being Mortal, The Kind Worth Killing, The Royal We. And I also read The Admissions. Several others are ones I own. So many lovely books.
I'm another party animal. Hubby and I were trying to see if our favorite Mexican food place will be open around 5PM for dinner. LOL
Happy New Year!
