Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok - I absolutely loved this book. Kwok's first novel is semi-autobiographical and tells the story of Kimberly Chang and her mother coming to America from Hong Kong. Although she attends school during the day, she works in a sweatshop at night, her family's success resting on her shoulders. I still think about this book from time to time and was so excited to have met Kwok at BEA in 2019.
The Red Thread by Ann Hood- Ann Hood is another author I met at BEA and love. In this novel, Maya Lange operates an adoption agency that places Chinese infants with American families. As the stories of six hopeful families are shared, Lange confronts the loss of her own daughter.
The All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor- this book has been around a while, and ten years ago I read it aloud for the last time to my youngest daughter. I read this book to myself as a child and remembered bits and pieces and have loved sharing it with them. The five sisters and their day-to-day activities in the early 1900s charmed me when I read it to myself, and I loved re-reading this book with my girls.
A Faraway Island by Annika Thor- this WWII story is the first in a series. At the time I read it, the second book had not yet been translated, and although I meant to return to it, I have yet to pick it up. Two sisters from Vienna are sent to Sweden where they are hoping to be reunited with their parents as soon as they are able to get there. But the girls are with foster families longer than initially intended as the parents are unable to reunite with them and the war takes a turn for the worse.
Men and Dogs by Katie Crouch - I loved this cover then and I still do. I remember little of the story, just that Hannah's father left when she was a child, and two decades later, as Hannah's life is unraveling, she returns to her mother's home and her father's disappearance once again becomes her focus.

I've read The Red Thread and liked it a lot. We have two nieces that were adopted from China and that's what sparked me initially to read the book. I should reread it.
