I feel like this week I've not only read one of my favorite genres (historical fiction), but also stepped outside of my comfort zone and read a novel classified as horror, and a novel based on a classic I absolutely detested....and I enjoyed all three reading experiences.
The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager-Sager's books have been generating buzz for quite a while but I have never picked one up until now. I absolutely could not put this one down. I loved the writing style and suspense. And then....I hit page 246. And things got weird. I didn't much care for the plot from that point on. I finished it, but I know that horror is not really my thing at all. However, I really liked Sager's writing style and I might even read something by him again....just knowing that I will probably hit a point where I just am ready to be done with some books.
Hester by Laurie Lico Albanese- I read the Scarlet Letter and I think I hated almost every page. (My sister read it and it is on her list of best books she's ever read....she actually used the word riveting to describe it). But, I loved this book. I always enjoy a book based on a famous person or event and this one is based on where Nathaniel Hawthorne found his inspiration for the Scarlet Letter. The time period of the book is also not my favorite, but Albanese really knocked it out of the park. This one was fantastic.
Jacqueline in Paris by Ann Mah - this is one I had high hopes for. I love pretty much any book about the Kennedys. I got busy at work this week, though, and I had to start and stop reading so many times, the whole experience felt disjointed. I am definitely chalking this up to reader error, because a book that focused on Jackie Kennedy's year in Paris before she married is definitely one that should be enjoyed.
And that's it....I have had a busy day at work today which means I am already feeling like I just can't quite catch up. I'm hoping that I can find some free reading time this week, but Middle Sister is home briefly for fall break, we have cross country districts and I have a hair appointment one evening.
Enjoy the week, everyone!
