Monday Mini-Reviews: Not a Lot of Reading This Past Week

This week I only have two books to share.  I feel like I haven't read much, but I had two blog tours instead of one last week, and two books for most people would be a ton of reading in just a week's time.

Anyway, the two I read were both great, so I'm happy to share them.

Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney is getting a lot of buzz.  As someone who enjoys a psychological thriller I knew I had to give this one a try.  And I was not disappointed. In fact, I got up at 4:30 this morning to finish it before work.
The first three sentences are ones I've seen shared all over, and each time I have heard them I've been intrigued:

My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.

How could I pass this one up?!  Narrated in Then and Now, we know that Amber has been in a horrible accident and is in a coma. Each chapter reveals a bit more about her past and what has led to the accident. Interspersed within the novel are diary entries from a child's diary.  And that's where things get creepy and weird.  I'm still processing things right now and am going to have to force my friend, Kristin, to move it up on her TBR pile to the top.  The ending?  Well, it left me wanting to talk to someone immediately.

Emergency Contact by Mary H. K. Choi is a YA novel that was fantastic. I haven't read any of Rainbow Rowell's work recently (I wish she would have something new come out soon), but for whatever reason, this book reminded me a little of hers.  Sam and Penny take turns narrating this story. When things begin the two don't know each other, but through strange circumstance where Sam collapses and Penny is the one to discover him, she becomes his "emergency contact."  Their relationship develops via text, and the two don't tell anyone about this new friendship they have.  Of course things aren't always simple, and a few bumps in the road occur as they try to navigate what they mean to each other.

I'm hoping this week is full of a few more books.  Yesterday was Middle Sister's confirmation, which meant a weekend full of house cleaning, food prep, and church.  We successfully accomplished all of this despite 16 inches of snow on Saturday.  There are lots of leftovers for the week - sheet cake as well as all the items I made for the pasta bar we had for the lunch we served.  There is also a lot of snow left on the ground.  I'm still hoping for warm weather to arrive for good.

Have a great week, everyone!

I have been intrigued with Sometimes I Lie. I didn't realize the child part and the ending. I'm adding to the TBR list.
