I love a good mystery, but seem to go in spurts. If I'm in the mood, I can read several in a row, and sometimes it might be months in between picking up a mystery. The holiday weekend was a perfect time to sit down with several good mysteries. These three are ones I'd recommend to anyone who loves this genre.
Gone to Dust by Matt Goldman is the first in a mystery series set in Minneapolis. I love books set in places that are familiar and I can only imagine that my cousins and aunts who still live there would be even more entertained as they would know exactly where he is writing of. Nils Shapiro is a self employed investigator after a very brief stint on the Minneapolis PD. When a divorced mother is found dead in her home he is brought in to assistant his friend in the investigation. There are twists and turns, of course, and I am hoping that I will continue to get to know these characters in the next installments in this series.
Shamed by Linda Castillo is the eleventh in the Kate Burkholder series. I had bits and pieces of this one figured out pretty early on, but I still love this series that centers around the Amish community in Pennsylvania. The first chapter reveals the brutal stabbing death of an Amish grandmother out picking up walnuts with her granddaughter. The rest of the novel is the search for the oldest granddaughter who was taken by the killer.
Conviction by Denise Mina- my sister-in-law loved this book which features a podcast transcript as a portion of it. Reese Witherspoon also picked this as her December book club pick, so this one is definitely on the radar of many readers after Reese picked it. I liked the narrator's voice in this one as well as the podcast portion. A young mother finally must reveal she has changed her identity and been in hiding because of something from her past. Creepy, suspenseful, European adventure. Mina is a new-to-me author, and I'm going to be looking for more of her work to enjoy.
I'm happy I made it through three mysteries (and a few other books over break), but I still have a stack of ones I'd like to read soon.
