Middle Grade: Sweeping Up the Heart

When I was an elementary school librarian I spent a lot of time reading Kevin Henkes' picture books to first graders.  I have a deep love for Lily's Purple Plastic Purse and all the other mouse books Henkes has created. But because they were first graders, we never read any of Henkes' chapter books and they are also delightful.

Sweeping Up The Heart is Henkes' newest middle grade novel.  I think this one is geared for anyone third grade on up, and it is touching and heartbreaking.

Amelia lives with her father, an English professor, who loves his daughter yet has a hard time connecting with her and sharing his feelings.  Luckily Mrs. O'Brien an elderly neighbor helps care for Amelia, completing household chores, but also providing a motherly presence in her life.

Amelia dreams of taking a spring break trip but is stuck at home.  There's nothing exciting about that, but when she meets a boy, Casey, at the neighborhood art center things start to look up.  The two develop a friendship - both of them dealing with some difficult things, and appreciate the support they provide each other.

When Casey thinks he sees Amelia's mom's spirit, the two set out to find the woman who might be Amelia's mom.

This is such a beautiful story of friendship, of grieving and moving on, and of finding acceptance.  Sweeping Up The Heart is a quiet book, yet it is a story that will stick with you.
