National Library Week: Ten Pictures Books About Libraries

This week just happens to be National Library Week. I've been celebrating a bit at school by reading some library themed picture books to all the students, along with sharing some trivia about libraries and handing out "book worms" (gummy worms).

Here are ten great books that library lovers will want to read for themselves:

1. Thomas Jefferson Builds a Library by Barbara Rosenstock - this is full of facts of Jefferson's own love for books and the way he helped our country begin it's own library.

2.  Miss Moore Though Otherwise by Jan Pinborough- Annie Carol Moore helped create libraries for children - a demographic ignored up until a hundred years ago

3.  The Library by Sarah Stewart - one of my all-time favorites; Elizabeth's life revolves around books, and she leaves her town the best gift ever.

4.  Library Mouse by Daniel Kirk- this little mouse lives in the library, writing books at night that he leaves for children to find.

5.  Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen- the librarian is strict about following library rules, but what rules does a lion need to follow when visiting the library?

6.  That Book Woman by Heather Henson - Cal doesn't much like reading, but the Book Woman keeps coming to their house, even though it's hard to get to.  This story honors the Packhorse Librarians of a time gone by.

7.  Dewey: There's a Cat in the Library by Vicki Myron - true story (mostly) of the Spencer, Iowa library that found a cat in their book return box one cold day and how Dewey came to live at the library for many years.

8. Goin' Someplace Special by Patricia McKissack - the story of a girl who loves going to the library, the one place black people aren't facing segregation.

9.  The Inside Outside Book of Libraries by Julie Cummins - provides a look at a variety of types of libraries that exist

10.  Librarian on the Roof! A True Story by M. G. King - the true story of a librarian who slept on the roof of the library for a week as a means of raising money for it.

I have loved sharing these books with students, and am thinking I may need to carry on the idea that National Library Week lasts longer than just a week so I can get a few more titles read to my classes.
