The Knockoff
I was an instant fan of The Devil Wears Prada when it was first published, so when comparisons have been made about The Devil and The Knockoff, I was more than a little excited to read this novel.
Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza do not disappoint. I completely appreciated this fun novel about a woman who is being undermined by a twenty-something who feel as though technology is the only way to succeed in the workforce. Although my job as an educator is about as far away as you can imagine from a glossy magazine editor, I could appreciate the ring of truth there is to this story, while still chuckling to myself as the characters are also over the top.
Imogen has been off of work for six months dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis. Upon her return, she is stunned to see Eve, a former intern, has managed to change the Glossy magazine into something unrecognizable. Eve has even managed to put an end to publishing a print version of the magazine and has changed Glossy into an app.
Although Imogen tries to role with the changes and learn more tech tricks, she is truly not a digital native, and there is much about Eve's way of management that leaves a lot to be desired.
And as Imogen continues to work for Eve, there is more and more she learns about her former intern, a girl she once thought was helpful and competent, that leaves a lot to be desired.
I loved, loved, loved this novel. It's the smart type of chick lit that I enjoyed in The Devil Wears Prada. The only regret is that these types of novels come along so seldomly. A perfect beach read for the summer months, there is plenty of attention on this novel right now.
