The Heroes' Welcome

The Heroes' Welcome by Louisa Young is a book I received to be a part of TLC Book Tours.  Interestingly enough, when I signed up for this book, I knew almost nothing about it aside from the fact the little blurb I found on Amazon. 

Then the book came in the mail and right before I started reading, I started to investigate Young, who also wrote My Dear I Wanted To Tell You, which just happens to be the first novel I received from the Amazon Vine program.  

The characters I knew from My Dear have returned in what Young plans to be a trilogy (also something I was unaware of).  The bad news is that I read the first novel long enough ago that it was hard for me to dredge up much about it.  Yet, The Heroes' Welcome definitely stands alone.  

Friends Peter and Julia Locke and Nadine and Riley Purefoy show the devastation of war even after the last battle.  The novel begins with Riley and Nadine's marriage, a high point, but both couples have so much to deal with after the war, that the happiness of the wedding is quickly forgotten as reality sets in.  Young does a good job of showing the psychological effects of war, creating realistic characters who suffer long after the last battle has been fought.

I love historical fiction, and The Heroes' Welcome is a solid middle installment in this series.
