Changing Tastes

Several years ago I read and loved the Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Wesiberger. I have read everything Weisberger writes, and in general, enjoy them. Her most recent book, Last Night at Chateau Marmont, has been sitting in a stack of library books for far too long. Upon starting it, I knew I would enjoy it. But, I also recognized this as a chick lit book that I just usually don't pick to read anymore.

Last Night At Chateau Marmont is a fun read. Brooke and Julian Alter have been married for five years. During that time Brooke has worked two jobs to help Julian realize his musician ambitions. When he achieves instant stardom and becomes a sex symbol, their lives change dramatically. Brooke finds it difficult to have her looks scrutinized by everyone, always seeming to fall short of the model thin glamourous women she is measured against. Julian is enjoying his fame, and seems to lose perspective as he galivants across the globe, often forgetting his wife and their marriage.

The ending is no surprise in this one, and I left feeling happy at Brooke and Julian's ability to find each other once again. However, reading Last Night At Chateau Marmont made me realize how little I choose to read this type of book. It is true that tastes change over time, and as far as chick lit goes, mine have. Every once in a while I still enjoy the chick lit book, but more and more I find myself gravitating toward women's fiction - which is probably a close relative to chick lit- but just has a bit more depth to it.
