Monday Mini-Review: It's Quality Not Quantity

I'm not racing through books these days, but the books I have read have made up for any lack of quantity by the enjoyment I'm finding in reading books that are so well written.

I've seen Bad Words all over the place and it's both literary and a romance, which seems like something that is not easy to pull off.  But Robinson did it - and did it well.  Selina is a book critic who has been assigned to read and write about Parker Navarro's debut novel.  Selina's scathing review of a novel Parker hoped would be the start of a successful career as a writer puts the two at odds with each other.  The two spar publicly - and they also start to correspond privately - which is where they get to know each other...and decide that maybe they don't actually hate each other.

I wasn't sure how Robinson would accomplish the seismic shift in Selina and Parker's feelings for each other believably, but I loved every page of this book.

I'll be the first to tell you that I don't love science fiction, or supernatural, dystopian, or fantasy genres, and yet each time I say this, I am proven wrong when I read a book that falls in one of those genres.

Under Story by Chloe Benjamin is one of the most unique plots I've read in recent times (or maybe ever).

Laurel is a scientist who took a job at McMurdo Station as a dishwasher. She's recently divorced and still grieving the loss of her young son and needs to get away.  Eli, her ex-husband, and also a scientist shows up at McMurdo as well. The two begin to talk about the possibility of a parallel universe and the hope of somehow going there to see their son again.

This book is thought provoking and made me think about things I'd never even imagined.  I feel like this would make a great book club selection and want to talk this over with someone after they've read it.

I'm hoping I continue to find some great books to enjoy for the rest of the year because October has been full of winners.
