This past week I have picked up a couple of books that are slim in terms of page count, but with some substance. In fact, I've thought about both of them after I finished.
My Name Is Lucy Barton is the first of four books by Strout featuring Lucy and her friends and family. I read the Oh, William earlier this year and then picked up Lucy By the Sea which was recently published. I loved Oh, William! and also enjoyed Lucy By The Sea, and just can't quite seem to get enough of these characters. So, I decided to go back to where the story starts in My Name Is Lucy Barton. This book is set after Lucy has an operation and her mother comes back to visit her. Lucy's past is so interesting that I've already looked to check out the second book, Anything Is Possible, where Lucy reconnects with her siblings. I also am in love with Strout's writing style which is spare, yet still says so much.
Dinosaurs by Lydia Millet- this is a book I've been seeing all over instagram and on blogs. Sometimes I shy away from books that are getting all the hype, but I decided that at only 230 pages, this is one I could quickly read. Gil walks from New York to Arizona where he decides to stay after a big break-up. He becomes involved with his neighbors, quickly becoming their friend and helping take care of their son. There are connections between dinosaurs/birds/people and extinction which I probably didn't entirely get or appreciate as much as I should have, but I did find them interesting. I feel like this is a book that is quiet, character driven, and will stick with me a while. After reading this one, I feel like I would like to try another of Millet's books since she has a backlist of titles just waiting to be enjoyed.
And that's it for Monday. I'm hoping to see some cozy reading time this week in the evenings because since it is dark by 6:00, it feels like the nights last forever.
