Alan Gratz is one of the most checked out authors (aside from graphic novels) that I have in my middle school library. I am so excited that he's got a new book for kids to fall in love with.
And Gratz is tackling a new subject, taking on climate change. I appreciate that Gratz has the ability to end every single chapter on a cliffhanger and somehow connect three stories by book's end.
A hurricane in Florida that wipes out Miami, a wildfire in California, and the melting of the polar ice caps leaving some kids in that path of a starving polar bear are the the three different storylines in this book. Gratz's own feelings about global warming are evident, but there is great information in this book (I learned a lot myself) and fast paced action.
This story was intense and Gratz has his formula for writing down pat.
I still find Refugee impossible for him to top, but I enjoyed that he is writing on a new topic and can't wait for kids to read it.
And if you are interested in more climate fiction, two titles come to mind:
What other climate fiction titles should I add to the list?
