There's quite a bit of buzz about Laura Lippman's newest book, Sunburn. After devouring it on my most recent snow day (sigh. I'll be going to school all summer at this rate), I can see what all the fuss is about.
I've read other books by Lippman and always enjoy them. Most of them have faded from my memory, although I remember liking them, and even bits and pieces of some of the stories. This book, however, will not fade any time soon.
Wow.
Set in 1995, we meet Polly (which may or may not be her real name) as she leaves her unhappy marriage - walking away from her husband and three year old daughter, leaving no trail for them to follow.
She makes a new life for herself in a small town, waiting tables, but never with the intent of settling there forever. Everything Polly does seems calculated, yet when she begins to date Adam, a cook at the restaurant, there are some things that aren't necessarily a part of the plan.
Adam also has his own secrets. He already knows about Polly, yet his plans to get information about her don't work out for him as planned, either. As the two become lovers their secrets from the past are often ignored.
Until they can't be ignored any longer.
And that's all I can say without giving things away. This is definitely a book you will want to read all of in one sitting. You will want to understand Polly's motivations which make her actions not seem quite as horrible. You will want both Polly and Adam find happiness, but feel things begin to spiral out of control. You might even hate Polly.
I know it's still February and this book can be enjoyed any time of year, but this book is the perfect beach book. The coastal, tourist town is the perfect setting for this story and it will make a great addition to any summer reading list that's published.
I can't wait to discuss it with someone.

Hmmm...I'm still a little on fence about this one. I've read mixed reactions, though I have enjoyed other standalone books by this author. Maybe later in the spring.
I have my copy but I haven't started it yet. I still have two books ahead of it. It's been getting some good reviews but a few zingers too. Curious as to why.
I'm SO ready to start thinking about summer, so beach book recommendations are definitely not too early for me. :)
