Amy Rivers' second novel, Best Laid Plans and Other Disasters, was a great follow-up to Wallflower Blooming, which introduced us to cousins Val and Gwen.
While Val was the focus of the first novel, Gwen gets her turn in Best Laid Plans.
As the newly elected mayor of the city of Cambria, Colorado, Gwen is feeling a lot of pressure. There's issues with a city council member who seems to be out to get Gwen and she has put a lot of pressure on herself as well. All this is causing some major problems in her relationship with Jason, her boyfriend of a year.
There's nothing earth-shattering about this story. And that may be why I enjoyed it so much. I could see things spiraling downward with Gwen and Jason and hoped they would find a way to work things out. There were no hidden secrets that moved the plot forward. Instead it was a more realistic development of how many relationships flounder.
I like these characters, the predictability of the novels, the town of Cambria, and Gwen and Val. I am excited to see that this is part of a planned trilogy, which means I get to reacquaint myself with these characters again sometime.
