The Hopefuls

Every time I turn on the television there's a political ad, and the news is full of election information all the time.  Mostly I'm sick of it - and have been for a long time. However, I love books about the First Families, and can't help but pick up any novel set in DC.

The Hopefuls is written by Jennifer Close, and I loved her two other novels, Girls in White Dresses and The Smart One, and since this one is written by an author I love and it is set in DC, it was pretty much a no-brainer that The Hopefuls would be on my TBR list.

Beth and her husband Matt have just moved to DC from New York City.  Beth had to give up her job for the move, which is helping advance Matt's career.  There's not much she likes about DC at first, especially because she is lonely.  When they meet Ashleigh and Jimmy at a party, the two women instantly click.  They become a foursome, eating together, going out together, talking many times each day.

Washington, D.C., is full of ambitious people, and both Jimmy and Matt have career goals that may get in the way of their friendship and even their marriages.

Close has written another winner.  This novel is all about the characters, as Close has an expert eye for relaying minute details about people's thoughts and actions and weaving them into her characters.  She's perfectly captured the waxing and waning of a friendship as well as what life in D.C. is like.  I loved this one, and was only sad when I turned the last page.

So glad this one worked out for you. The cover is cute.

I could use a little less political news though. I can't even watch TV right now.

I've got this one to read in the next few weeks. Hoping it works well for me. Your description sounds like one I'd like. And I see that you are reading that First Ladies book on the treadmill. I listened to THE RESIDENCE on audio and really liked it. I've always been fascinated with the First Ladies. The exhibit at the Smithsonian of their gowns is beautiful and I love it. So, I'm interested in hearing what you think.
